L26 Wine lunch with Basque Lamb Stew by Mark Bradford

CABERNET ACROSS TWO CONTINENTS

Australia and Bordeaux with the benefit of age

How differently does Cabernet develop on opposite sides of the world?

This tasting brings together three mature Australian Cabernets and three distinguished wines from Bordeaux, offering a rare opportunity to compare their evolution in the bottle. The Australian wines span three important regions and more than a decade of vintages, while the French selection comes from the exceptional 2000 Bordeaux vintage and includes leading examples from Saint-Julien and Pauillac.

The wines are:

1991 Seppelt Dorrien Cabernet Sauvignon
1996 Yeringberg Cabernet Sauvignon
2002 Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon

2000 Château Talbot, Saint-Julien
2000 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac
2000 Clos du Marquis, Saint-Julien

Will the Australians show greater richness and generosity, or will Bordeaux prevail through structure, complexity and restraint? With wines of this age, the answer may be less predictable than expected.

A fascinating examination of Cabernet, terroir and the transformative effects of time—and a tasting unlikely to be repeated.
